LAS VEGAS – HELP of Southern Nevada is able to give more young people in crisis a safe place to sleep thanks to a boost from WaFd Bank Foundation. Earlier this summer, HELP received the community grant, which allows the nonprofit to act quickly to help youth who are living on the streets.

The $7,500 grant translates directly into 81 additional shelter nights at the Shannon West Homeless Youth Center (SWHYC). Because of the immediate support, unhoused youth in Southern Nevada don’t have to wait for program-specific beds to open and can get help right away.

Among the services provided to get young people off the streets and out of encampments, HELP offers shelter, food, health and wellness services, case management, education, and employment assistance. HELP also provides them with access to addiction and mental health programs. The center can house 150 youth at a time, providing stability and assisting their transition into stable housing.

“Every night that we can provide a bed instead of a park bench can change the trajectory of the life of a young person,” says Joan Lima, development manager for HELP of Southern Nevada. “It truly takes a village, and we are grateful that WaFd Bank is one of our community partners.”

“We are honored to support the mission of HELP of Southern Nevada,” said Trisha Keener Wale, Customer Service Representative, at the WaFd Bank Henderson location. “HELP is on the frontlines of ending youth homelessness in our community. Everyone benefits when our young people have a safe place to stay.”

HELP also provides direct services, assistance and training to families and individuals throughout Southern Nevada to help them attain self-sufficiency.
