Building Stronger Connections Between Residents and Law Enforcement
Las Vegas, NV – The city of Las Vegas Department of Public Safety is now accepting applications for its Fall 2025 Citizen Police Academy. This 12-week voluntary program offers residents a behind-the-scenes look into law enforcement operations and public safety initiatives within the city. The application deadline is August 3, 2025, and the program begins on Wednesday, August 27, running through November 12, with weekly sessions from 6 to 9 p.m.
This unique academy, designed specifically for Las Vegas residents and those working within city limits, aims to foster transparency, trust, and community engagement by educating participants on the inner workings of the city’s Department of Public Safety. With a strong emphasis on community collaboration, the Citizen Police Academy is not a recruitment program or job offer but a free and voluntary educational opportunity for individuals interested in public safety and civic involvement.
Who Can Participate?
Eligible applicants must:
- Be 18 years or older
- Live or work within the city of Las Vegas
- Have no felony convictions
What to Expect in the Citizen Police Academy

Over the 12-week course, participants will engage in in-depth classroom sessions and interactive demonstrations covering topics such as:
- Patrol operations
- Arrest, search, and seizure procedures
- Bike and motorcycle patrol strategies
- Use of force and case law
- Animal protection services
- Detention and custody operations
- Call processing and emergency response

Participants will also tour key public safety facilities, including the Las Vegas Detention Center and the Fremont Street Substation, offering an immersive view of day-to-day law enforcement activities.
Beyond Graduation: Join the Alumni Association

Graduates of the Citizen Police Academy are invited to join the Las Vegas Citizens Police Academy Alumni Association (C.P.A.A.A.), an organization dedicated to continuing education and community involvement. The association meets monthly on the third Thursday, featuring guest speakers from law enforcement and the legal field. It also offers members exclusive access to special tours, law enforcement updates, and an informative newsletter.
