Janssen Will Take Over In September For Retiring City Manager Jorge Cervantes

At today’s meeting, the Las Vegas City Council unanimously approved the employment contract for Mike Janssen as Las Vegas’ next city manager. He is now set to assume those duties after the retirement of current City Manager Jorge Cervantes. Janssen has been with the city for more than 25 years.

On June 7, Janssen was selected by the City Council to become city manager. Since his selection, the city and Janssen worked out the specifics of his employment contract.

Janssen will take over as city manager on Sept. 1. Current City Manager Jorge Cervantes is retiring after 25 years with the city of Las Vegas. Cervantes has served as city manager since Nov. 15, 2020.

Janssen, originally from Queens, New York, began his career in government with the City of New York more than 29 years ago. He joined the city of Las Vegas in 1997 as an engineering associate and has risen through the ranks holding various leadership positions in Public Works including engineering project manager, assistant city traffic engineer, transportation manager and Public Works director. In November 2020 he was promoted to the Executive Director of Infrastructure where he oversaw a staff of 550 responsible for planning, designing, constructing, operating and maintaining all of the city’s public infrastructure.

Janssen received his undergraduate degree from the Rochester Institute of Technology in Civil Engineering Technology and he has a Master of Public Administration from UNLV. He has been a licensed professional civil engineer since 1999, and a certified professional traffic operations engineer since 2004. In 2013, the Nevada Chapter of the Institute of Transportation Engineers recognized him as Transportation Engineer of the Year.
